Imagimariam

is a portmanteau of image, magi, and Mariam, and intended to be a play off of “imaginarium”, a realm where imagination runs wild. This is the digital palace where some of Mariam’s magical creations, in their pixelated formats, reside.

But, what about magi? A magus (sg.) is a member of a priestly caste in ancient Iranian religions, such as Zoroastrianism and Mazdaism. The word was later borrowed into western tradition through Greek and Latin and is associated with the Biblical “three Wise Men”, or the Magi. “Mage”, meaning mystic, warlock, or magician, is also derived from magus. Some false cognates of mag- also come to mind, such as magnus for “great”, or magister for “scholar” (or someone with authority over something), as opposed to minister— an administrator to an overarching entity (such as a minister within the Ministry of Culture). Coincidentally, that is also the meaning of my surname: Alwazir, or “The Minister”.
