Sana’a

Sana’a: Multilingual Impressions, 2018.
Traditional Illustration
Copic Markers on Paris Paper; Gold leaf.
34 x 28 cm

This is a visual representation of Sana’a, the capital city of Yemen. This illustration conveys the diversity of languages used in Yemen over the centuries. From top to bottom, the languages read “Sana’a”, in the Sabaean, Arabic, Hebrew, and. Syriac scripts. The lettering is more illustrative than calligraphic, and mimics the distinct architectural style in Yemen. Some elements include the sandstone bricks, painted ornamental patterns, minarets, and stained glass windows. These are but a few of the features found throughout Yemen’s architectural heritage.  For more details on the research of this piece and the creation process, read my post on Beyond Babylonia.
