Among the Stars, 2020.
Calligraphy: Illuminated Manuscript
Gouache paint on Paris Paper; Archival ink; Gold leaf.
34 x 28 cm
An experiment with Arabic letterforms using a phrase that roughly translates to:
“aim for the moon, but if you miss, you will still land among the stars“.
This happens to be one of the widely circulated phrases, with various claims to the original authorship. Most sources point to W. Clement Stone as the author of this quote (in English).
The Arabic lettering here is in a whimsical, but very legible, style. Cosmic and geometric patterns have been painted to form a quasi-frame around the calligraphy. In Arabic, the imperative verb koon means “be; exist” and the noun kawn for “universe” are spelt identically using the Arabic abjad.
